Contemporary Dance Showcase, APAP New York, 8 - 12 Jan 2010

Culture Ireland invites applications from professional dance artists/companies to participate in a contemporary dance showcase as part of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Annual Conference in 2010.

The showcase will consist of extracts (maximum 15 minutes duration, one extract per company/artist) from completed dance works to be performed in a well-appointed studio, under rehearsal conditions, at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January.

The APAP conference is an annual event that takes place in New York and is the leading international performing arts market for North America and Canada. It is a key opportunity for artists working in the performing arts (specifically theatre, dance and music) to meet and network with international promoters and presenters and to showcase work which is available and ready for touring up to 2012.

Culture Ireland’s participation at APAP will be similar to our showcase initiatives at other major arts markets and will include hosting a national stand at the APAP EXPO, leading and coordinating the Irish delegation and offering financial support to Irish dance artists selected to showcase at the event. APAP is strategically important for Culture Ireland in the development of further opportunities to present high-quality Irish arts work in the US.

The following criteria will apply in the selection process:

- The proposed excerpt should be from a finished work that has already received a professional production

- Priority will be given to those companies/artists who have suitable high-quality work available to tour for a period of at least 18 months after January 2010

- Successful applicants will be required to have appropriate promotional material available for distribution to international contacts (e.g. DVD's brochures, etc)

- Culture Ireland aims to showcase a strong programme of work that reflects the diversity and range of Irish contemporary dance practice

- Special consideration will be given to artists/companies who have experience of international touring

It is important to note that artists/companies who are successful in their application to participate in the showcase will receive a contribution towards the international presenting costs (e.g. travel, accommodation, subsistence) but will be expected to cover some production costs (e.g. re-mounting/re-rehearsal costs, marketing and promotion costs etc).

The selection of companies/artists will be made by Culture Ireland, with the assistance of peer panel assessment. Closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Thursday 10th September 2009.
